Bakhoor is the traditional Arabian home fragrance: wood chips soaked in fragrant oils and warmed over charcoal or an electric bakhoor burner, so the scented smoke fills a room and settles into clothes and hair. It is the smell of Gulf homes, Eid mornings and guests arriving.

How to use bakhoor

• Heat a charcoal tablet in a bakhoor burner (mabkhara) until it glows, or switch on an electric burner.
• Place one or two chips on top; they start to release scented smoke within a minute.
• Let the smoke drift through the room, or hold clothes and scarves above it for a few seconds.
• Never leave a lit burner unattended, keep it away from curtains and children, and air the room afterwards.
