Jean Paul Gaultier Ultra Male is one of the defining gourmand masculines of the last decade — sweet, fresh, and unmistakable. Mint, pear, lavender, and vanilla layered over a warm woody-gourmand base. It is a fragrance that has become shorthand among younger men for "the scent that gets compliments in a club" — and unlike most fragrances with that reputation, it actually earns it.
Flora Five's interpretation is an alcohol-free attar — a concentrated roll-on oil — that carries the Ultra Male silhouette in a format that holds far longer on skin than the spray, especially in humid weather. We borrow the silhouette, not the formula.
Ultra Male opens with a rush of mint, pear, and lavender — fresh, slightly sweet, unmistakably gourmand-leaning. The heart brings in vanilla, tonka bean, and a cedar-amber structure. The drydown is warm — vanilla, amber, cedar — and the sweetness, critically, never tips over into dessert territory. It stays masculine. That is the balance the original gets right.
We kept the silhouette — the mint-pear-lavender open, the vanilla-tonka heart, the warm amber-cedar drydown — and rebuilt it as an alcohol-free concentrated oil. The attar carries the gourmand warmth particularly well because concentrated oil is the format these materials were traditionally blended in. The opening is less sharp than the spray; the heart settles in faster and holds longer; the drydown is noticeably warmer and more skin-close than the EDT version.
Evenings out. Winter daytime. Dates. Concerts, clubs, long dinners, late flights. The composition reads youthful-but-not-juvenile, which is a rare balance in gourmand masculines. For office wear it is a loud pick — one drop keeps it contained; two drops makes it a statement.
One drop to a pulse point. Wrist, neck, behind the ear. Do not rub. The oil warms to skin over the first ten minutes, the mint-vanilla heart opens, and the warm amber-cedar drydown settles in for the evening. Because the composition is sweet-warm, less is more — do not overapply or it can tip from confident to aggressive.
